Top 5 Tips for Surviving Your First Summer in Orlando

So, you’ve just moved to Orlando, and you’re wondering how you’re going to survive your first summer here. Well, you’re in luck! I’m a native Floridian, and I’ve got some insider tips that will help you keep cool and comfortable during the hot summer months. Here are my top 5 tips for surviving your first summer in Orlando.

1. Embrace the pool.

There’s no better way to cool off in Orlando than by getting in the pool. Whether you have a pool at home or you go to a public pool, swimming is a great way to stay cool and have fun. And if you have kids, swimming is a great way to get them out of the house and burn off some energy. Side note: Please be aware that lakes are most likely not the best option. I would avoid them as its safe to assume the presence of alligators. Click here if you want to learn more about alligator safety.

2. Stay hydrated.

It’s important to stay hydrated, especially in the summer. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and avoid sugary drinks like soda and juice. You can also try drinking herbal teas or infused waters for a refreshing change of pace. I recommend getting a great Nalgene water bottle to bring with you everywhere you go. It’s a great way to stay hydrated and it’s also a reusable option that is better for the environment.

3. Dress for the weather.

This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s important to dress for the weather in Orlando. This means wearing lightweight, breathable fabrics and avoiding dark colors, which can absorb heat. You may also want to consider investing in a few summer essentials, like a sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

4. Find AC.

When you’re out and about, try to find AC whenever possible. This could mean going to the movies, heading to a restaurant with friends, or even just taking a break in your car with the AC on. There are also a number of indoor attractions in Orlando, such as museums, malls, and arcades, that offer a welcome respite from the heat.

5. Take breaks.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the heat, don’t be afraid to take a break. It’s important to listen to your body and take breaks when you need them. The sun down here can be brutal at times and dehydration can sneak up on you pretty quickly.

Here are a few additional tips that Floridians swear by:

  • Keep a frozen water bottle in the fridge and take it with you wherever you go.
  • Use a mister to cool down on hot days.
  • Eat light, refreshing meals.
  • Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
  • Get a good night’s sleep.

Following these tips will help you survive your first summer in Orlando and stay cool and comfortable all season long. So relax, enjoy the sunshine, and don’t forget to hydrate!
